Thanks for this question! First, it would be best to recognize if your new home builder falls along the spectrum of producing "production" and "custom" homes. Along the spectrum, you’ll find builders who offer complete customization of their own floor plans, including moving walls and redesigning spaces, and other builders who offer an “A,” “B,” or “C” choice of finishes but won’t let you make structural changes to their plans. When initially choosing a builder, it's good to ask up front "How much personalization do you allow? Can I make structural changes to your plans?". Keep in mind some builders have already arranged the permits for the homes they are building in the communities they have created, and while this allows the homes to be built faster, it means that no structural changes can be made.
There are a lot of builder testimonials about this topic in our ebook: New Home 101 . Check it out for more options and different builder perspectives on the subject of structural changes.
